i went back home for the weekend and
drove down a street of the same name as yours
Octavia...
there was mystery from the changes...no longer familiar
remanants of before
the fell street freeway no longer floated from above, it
simply ended and filtered out
and dispensed onto
and down a street of the same name as yours
Octavia...
it keeps going...intersecting with filmore, and up and away through
Japantown, passing Lombard...and meeting with the ocean...
and diving straight in...

Black science fiction trailblazer Samuel Delaney, 63, remembers teaching Butler as a 23-year-old student at the Clarion Science Fiction Workshop. She was, he says, incredibly shy, a student who spoke only when she had something to say, but someone who obviously had great talent.

It was years later, however, after she had published "Kindred," that he saw what she had become. "It was wonderful to see how she had bloomed and gained so much self-confidence and become a really extraordinary public speaker," Delaney says. She also was a pathblazer in a genre where once you could count the black writers on one hand.

whose to say that you weren't the time traveler trekking back
and forth to here...the present...reciting your travels
in scripture of sci-fi...maybe that was your code
and the ciphers are the one's who are captivated...and remain
riding with your starship
whose to say that you weren't from the very places that were so vividly described...your voice captivating...your presence breathtaking

you spoke with confidence and regality...that was a lasting impression
